Proper Grease and Cooking Oil Disposal

Published: November 20, 2023

We would like to remind you that leftover fats, oils, and grease, combined with food particulates discarded down the drains or toilet bowl, stick to the insides of the sewer systems and over time can block the entire pipe, resulting in sewer back-ups and overflows that can damage your home and the environment.

We can prevent clogs and avoid expensive plumbing repairs and damage to the sewer system by following a few simple rules:

    • Let the oil or grease cool down and solidify. Scrape or pour the grease into a covered container and discard with your regular garbage. Avoid using the garbage disposal.
    • Remove any excess grease and oil from dishes, pans, fryers, and griddles by scraping or wiping off with a paper towel. Discard towel in trash can. Avoid rinsing off oil and grease with hot water, as the oil will solidify once it cools down and this will cause grease buildups and sewer line blockage.
    • Cover the kitchen sink with a catch basket and empty it into the garbage can as needed.

For more information, please check out the attached flyers for tips on how to dispose of oils and fats and keep our drains clean!
